Hermes Agent alternative for computer use

Hermes Agent, the MIT-licensed agent Nous Research released in February 2026, takes computer use seriously: background-first, with screenshot, vision and accessibility-tree modes. Melaya Computer Control shares the background-first idea and adds two things a computer use agent needs at work: every write is verified, and one model call plans many steps.

The verdict

Pick Hermes Agent if you want an open, self-improving agent that writes its own skills and you are happy to tune it. Pick Melaya if the job runs through Windows admin tools or business apps where a click that silently does nothing is not acceptable, and you want fewer model calls per task.

Melaya vs Hermes Agent, side by side

How each one sees the screen, spends model calls, checks its own work and keeps you in control.

What mattersMelayaHermes Agent

Where Hermes Agent is strong

Hermes Agent is one of the more thoughtful open agents for computer use. It is MIT-licensed, it treats the background as the default place to work, and it lets you choose how the model sees the screen.

  • Background input, so the agent can work while you keep using the computer.
  • A learning loop that writes new skills from what it did.
  • Approval modes, including a bounded mode.
  • Three ways to see the screen: set-of-marks screenshots, vision, or the accessibility tree.

Where Melaya is different

Why System One matters

Two ideas separate Melaya from Hermes Agent. First, System One: instead of a model call and a fresh screenshot per click, the model reads the real window once and plans the steps in a single call, Melaya grounds every target on the accessibility tree, and the small Laya model steps in only when a target is ambiguous. Second, verification: every action is checked against the window, so a run never reports done for a click that did nothing. Far fewer model calls and images per task, and the run stops at the first surprise instead of drifting.

Verified writes, even on admin windows

Hermes Agent's docs describe elevated Windows windows where capture returns 0 elements and a click reports success while doing nothing. Melaya detects admin windows up front and reports them. After every action it checks what changed, and when nothing did, the step says no effect.

One call plans many steps

The model sends the whole plan up front, up to 100 steps. Steps that ground with certainty run as one batch inside the app, each checked there, with no server round trip. The screen goes back to the model only at the first surprise.

Deterministic grounding, Laya as a gated fallback

Targets are found on the real tree by element reference, exact label or table row. Laya, Melaya's small System One model, decides only the ambiguous ones, and only when it is confident. A target nobody can pin down stops the run with a reason, not a guess.

The accessibility tree is the main view

UI Automation on Windows, Accessibility on macOS, AT-SPI2 on Linux. The tree is what the model reads first, not one mode among three. OCR and marked screenshots fill in for apps that draw their own pixels, in the same element-reference space.

Background first, honest about the foreground

Like Hermes Agent, Melaya prefers the background. Clicks and typing go through accessibility patterns where the OS allows, and when an app needs real input, the timeline says the run used the foreground.

Linux desktops, servers and VMs

X11 and Wayland on the desktop, packaged as AppImage, .deb or .rpm. On a headless machine or VM, npx @melaya/runner --computer makes it a computer your agents can use, under the same rules.

Per-app permission levels

View, Click or Full per app. Sensitive apps start off and the agent never types into password fields. Approvals before sending, deleting, buying or installing in Safe mode. Stop button, Stop shortcut, and a pause the moment you touch the mouse or keyboard.

Replayable runs and app playbooks

Every run reports its model calls, actions and seconds, and a finished run can be saved as a replayable workflow. Built-in playbooks cover 24 common desktop apps, from Excel and Outlook to File Explorer and Finder, and a connected Slack, Notion or Teams is used directly instead of clicking.

Phone, browser, computer and your coding agent

One platform drives your Android phone, your browser and your computer, runs scheduled pipelines, and plugs into Claude Code, Codex and Cursor through the Melaya MCP server. Bring any model: Claude, GPT, Gemini, Qwen or a local one.

05

Switching from Hermes Agent

Three steps. Keep Hermes Agent installed and run both on the same task.

  1. Download the app

Get Melaya for Windows, macOS or Linux. On a Mac, grant Accessibility and Screen Recording once. The app walks you through it.

  2. Connect this computer

Sign in, approve one consent screen, then pick the apps the agent may use and how far it may go: View, Click or Full.

  3. Give it the same task

Hand Melaya the task you gave Hermes Agent, ideally one that touches an admin tool or a business app. Watch each step get checked on the live timeline.

On a server or a VM?

No screen needed. Start the Melaya runner with computer control and the machine joins your account like any other computer, with the same permissions, approvals and timeline.

Hermes Agent alternative: questions people ask

What is a good Hermes Agent alternative for computer use?

Melaya Computer Control, if you need every write verified and fewer model calls per task. It reads the accessibility tree on Windows, macOS and Linux, plans many steps in one call through System One, detects admin windows up front, and runs inside per-app permission levels with approvals.

Does Hermes Agent work with admin windows on Windows?

Per its own docs (October 2026), on Windows with elevated (admin) windows, capture returns 0 elements and click reports success while doing nothing. Melaya detects admin windows up front and reports them, and every action is checked against the window afterwards.

Does Melaya work in the background like Hermes Agent?

Yes, background first. Actions go through the accessibility layer where the OS allows, without moving your cursor or pulling windows to the front. When an app only reacts to real input, Melaya falls back to it and says so.

Does Melaya learn like Hermes Agent's skill loop?

Differently. A finished Melaya run can be saved as a replayable workflow, and built-in playbooks cover 24 common desktop apps with the keyboard routes that work best. Hermes Agent's learning loop writes new skills, which is a real strength if you want the agent to grow on its own.

How many model calls does a Melaya task take?

As few as one for the plan. System One plans up to 100 steps in one call, Melaya grounds and checks them, and the model is asked again only at the first surprise. Every run reports its model calls, actions and seconds.

Can I use open-weight or local models?

Yes. Melaya runs Claude, GPT, Gemini and Qwen, and open-weight models on your own machine through Ollama or LM Studio. Because fast mode keeps model calls low, smaller local models do well too.

Give it the same task

Install the desktop app, connect this computer, switch on the apps you want help with, and run the job you gave Hermes Agent. Then read the model calls, actions and seconds the run reports.
